Cherry's Profile

Cherry Ngan first started learning the piano at the age of five and has since then achieved her second diploma in music at just the age of 16.  Last year she was nominated to compete in the New Zealand Young Performer of the Year, going on to gain the Potential Prize for the pianoforte section.  Earlier this year, she also performed as a soloist with the Trust Waikato Symphony Orchestra.  This talented pianist also won the Sonata Recital on 29 April in this year's Festival.  Cherry is 17 years of age and attends Hillcrest High School in Hamilton.  She studies the piano with Katherine Austin, a lecturer in piano performance at Waikato University.

The Aotea Youth Symphony

Each year this orchestra performs the vital task of accompanying the concerto finalists.  Without them, the concerto performances cannot be properly judged.

The orchestra was formed in 1986 by Paul Harrop ONZM., and draws players from the greater Auckland area. Demand to be part of the orchestra is intense and a training orchestra has been set up.  The Orchestra has a wide repertoire from popular music to standard classics and gives a number of concerts each year.  Tours have also been enjoyed, to Australia, U.S.A., Canada, Japan, and China.  Interested musicians can apply for membership through the Symphony's website: www.aotea.org.nz
