The Aotea Youth Symphony (AYS or Aotea for short) is a community based  orchestra for young musicians (ages 13 to 25),  under the Music Directorship of Paul Harrop, ONZM. It enjoys the Patronage of Dame Kiri Te Kanawa, and was formed in 1986  with the objective of providing a further dimension of performance for young musicians beyond that provided by school orchestras.

Sarah  was born in Auckland and is currently attending Diocesan School for Girls.  She has been studying Piano with Mr Qu Yong for over 6 years.  Sarah has won a number of first prizes during recent years.  Last year, she was the youngest participant in the Ronish Auckland Secondary Schools Piano Competition, in which she was awarded third prize.

Edward is a first year student at The University of Auckland studying for a BMus.  A Pupil of Rae de Lisle, he is majoring in performance piano with piano accordion as his second instrument study.  Edward has been a prize winner in many classes at the North Shore Competitions in the past few years.  He regularly accompanies singers and other instrumentalists as well as enjoying playing in stage bands and chamber music groups.

Jenny is in year 12 at Lynfield College.  She began studying Piano at age 5 in Hong Kong and when she moved to New Zealand at age 7, continued her studies in Auckland.  Jenny is currently working for her ATCL Diploma with Humberto Almeida at Able Music Studio.  She has won prizes at West Auckland and North Shore Competitions.

After the three performances and before Adjudicator Susan Smith gave the results, we were treated to a CONCERT featuring selected performers from the 56th Festival 2010.  It was wonderful entertainment and you can click here for photo coverage.
